Here’s the last myth about cloud computing in our final blog on the subject.
Myth 6—Cloud computing is ready for prime time
Again, cloud computing vendors promulgate this particular myth. However, according to the Gartner IT Hype Cycle, cloud computing currently is at the peak of inflated expectations just about to reach the trough of disillusionment. This is typical of exciting new technologies. As noted above, cloud computing is still immature; it will take another five years or so to be truly ready for prime time.

Before it gets there clouds will have to overcome two barriers:
- Financial—clouds will have to become more cost-competitive with well managed enterprise IT data centers
- Technical—clouds will have to address security, reliability, and integration with other enterprise back end systems
This does not mean that organizations should not take advantage of cloud resources today. Many organizations already are successfully leveraging cloud resources to avoid capital expenses, achieve better backup and recovery, meet compliance mandates for archiving, and access applications on a pay-per-use or subscription basis.
Conclusion: Computing transparency
Cloud computing is destined to become part of almost every organization’s IT strategy. Over time users won’t even differentiate between what comes from the cloud and what doesn’t. Computing infrastructure will become transparent.
Until then, organizations with efficient enterprise data centers may find the savings from cloud computing are not compelling. On the other hand, small and midsize organizations can stand to benefit immediately from cloud computing.
